"TRIO FORM FILM COMPANY THAT LOOKS TO THE FUTURE"
By John Stanley
Charles Evered is a nationally known playwright who has made the move into directing film. Marty James is a show biz veteran who produces, edits and continues working as an actor and David Ho is a well respected post production guru and music whiz. However, when the three of them get together they’re known as “Ordinance 14,” and they’re already a force to be reckoned with.
Evered, an Associate Professor at the University of California – Riverside, and a Navy vet, wrote and directed the award winning feature film Adopt a Sailor, starring Emmy winners Bebe Neuwirth and Peter Coyote. The film was produced by Kim Waltrip under her WonderStar banner. Adopt a Sailor went on to garner a distribution deal, a limited theatrical release and ended up being an “official selection” at more than 20 national and international film festivals. Oh, and did I mention it was produced for less than $300,000? And shot on both coasts in 14 days?
Opines James, who edited the film: “What Chuck did on Adopt a Sailor was nothing short of miraculous. He got the full cooperation of the United States Navy for free-- including the use of a battle ship and helicopters!”
Ho, who co-produced and worked post production on the film, gives Evered further kudos: “Chuck also shot ten plus pages a day, got Emmy winning actors attached to the project and he told a beautiful and memorable story.”
Asserts Evered: “Throwing money at a film doesn’t make it better. What matters to audiences are good stories. You can 3D-ize it, you could pack it full of so called “A list” stars, but if the story doesn't work, nobody will care.”
Evered, who has written scripts for major studios as well as for network and cable television, (Monk etc), studied at Yale under his mentor, Academy Award winning director George Roy Hill.
In addition to arming themselves with a common sense philosophy, Ordinance 14 will have a presence from one end of the country to the other. Evered commutes back and forth to LA from his home in Princeton, New Jersey and Ho and James live full time in LA. States Ho: “Being able to meet investors and talent on both sides of the country is a huge plus.” David Ho
Ordinance 14 has a full slate of projects in the works.
In the development hopper are four features and a short: The features include: Hidden Lake, an action piece involving drug cartels co-written by Pete Herrera, Ride, a teen drama about a prom queen who finds herself on the run with her mysterious limo driver, Beautiful Day –(Recently published on the online literary journal Connotation Press), the story of a father’s desperate attempt to reconcile with his daughter, and Sandy Hook---an all out doomsday thriller set in the age of terror. Out, the short, is the touching story of an overprotective mother and her confused middle aged son who face the realities of losing their home.
Already in the pre-production stage is Upon a Star— the tale of a washed up movie star who uses a sick teenager as a means to resurrect his stalled career. And finally, “The Ranch”---a timely drama about a rancher on the Arizona/Mexico border and the stranger he finds hiding on his land.
Evered, James and Ho are keenly aware of the changes facing the film industry. Their projects are varied when it comes to budget and scale. States James: “One of our projects has a budget of $10,000, while another is in the multi million dollar range. We’re keeping our bases covered and believe this is a great time to be a part of re-inventing this industry from the ground up.”
From the sound of it, Ordinance 14 is on its way to doing just that.
